Basic Health Kalangala

“He who has health has hope and he who has hope has everything.”

We believe that poverty is no denial to Basic Health Needs.

Basic Health Kalangala is a non profit organization working with tireless dedication to provide free and quality Health Services to the poor and unprivileged orphans, widows and old aged people of Ssese Islands, Kalangala District

Why Basic Health Kalangala is involved

Despite ongoing efforts by the government to improve healthcare services at ssese Islands, residents and healthcare professionals continue to face significant challenges in delivering adequate healthcare to the community.

Kalangala district which was curved out of Masaka over 30 years ago and now forms the Ssese county is home to over 70,000 people residing on 84 Islands.

Out of the 84 Islands, only 16 have small health facilities which jointly serve a population 54,000 people leaving the rest of the population neglected.

The state of healthcare of Kalangala is worrying with lack of a district hospital, many lives are lost on boats trying to reach nearby hospitals of Entebbe and Masaka districts.

When night falls, they are completely cut off because ferries, boats etc are not allowed to move at night

A case in point is a 26 year old Rose Nabawanuka who was referred to Kalangala health center IV ,the only facility in Ssese Islands with a medical surgeon for a caesarian birth. To get there she needed a canoe boat but she had become weak after so many hours in labor without treatment and care, she had also been hit by the direct sun on the lake after sailing about 38 nautical miles to Mwena landing site in Bugala, the main Island in Kalangala District, she died on arrival.
